The chestnut-fronted (ara severus) or extreme macaw is for the most part green in shading with patches of red and blue on the wings. The head has a chestnut cocoa fix simply over the snout. The nose is dark and the patches around the eyes are white with lines of little dark plumes. It is the one and only of the smaller than normal macaws that has lines of quills in the uncovered patches around its eyes. In the wild their ordinarily gregarious identity can turn out to be more forceful at adolescence giving them the name Ara Severe. This propensity can be controlled in imprisonment yet the species requires huge taking care of to make a manageable pet. It is 45–50 cm (18–20 in) long and weighs 300-410 grams (10.6-14.5 oz.)
